Athlete of the Month - Mike Glatts

How did you hear about Crossfit Delaware Valley? 
It was something that I saw on ESPN 6 and I remember watching the athletes in total amazement.  I was intrigued and thought it was something I wanted to try.

We can usually find you at the 9:30 classes and barbell club! Tell us a few of your favorite memories from those classes. 
More than anything I like to lift heavy stuff.  There is no greater felling then when you are with a group of people and you are watching friends lift more weight than they ever thought possible. Some lifts that come to mind would be Justin jerking 255lbs or Bobby with his 1/2 pound PRs or Duong cursing at the weights when she squats. All of these lifts are memorable and I am glad to have been able to cheer them on as they set new PRs, even if they are only a 1/2 pound PR.

We know Olympic lifting is a passion of yours. Can you tell us about your journey and what you enjoy about it? 
Olympic lifting is one of the most humbling endeavors that I have ever participated in.  I love the fact that you don't get to do well just because you show up. If you want to make gains you need bring all of you focus, energy, and intensity and even with all of that you may not PR. I love the grind and the likeminded people that I get to work next to.

What caused you to start to shift your focus to CrossFit workouts? 
The shift started last year at the in-house competition I was out of CrossFit workouts for about 10 months I saw how much fun everyone was having and I wanted to see if I could contribute to a team in the 2017 In-House competition. The transition was gradual and I feel I was able to contribute to the Dirty 9:30 and Nooners team this year.

Can you share with us a recent Crossfit or Olympic lifting achievement that is meaningful to you?
This year at Barbells and Bourbon I was able to PR my Snatch at 245lbs. A lot of work went into that and I am glad it was achieved at a competition at Del Val.

What are some short term and long term Olympic lifting and Crossfit goals that you that you would like to achieve? 
I have two goal for 2018
   * Place in the top 5 for Weightlifitng Nationals for my age group
   * Place in the top 5 for my age group in next year's Masters of the Universe CrossFit competition

We know you have been dialing in your nutrition lately. Tell us why you wanted to change your eating habits, what you are doing differently and the results you are seeing.  
The goal initially started out to lose a little bit of weight. How much was not defined and there was little to no plan to accomplish said goal.  But when Annie and I decided to team up for the All Y'all comp, she shared some tips that were simple.  

*Don't eat any food after 8:30 PM
*Dessert 2 nights a week instead of every night

The changes were simple and more importantly they were easy to adhere to.  With these two simple changes in place and a renewed commitment to CrossFit classes,  I have lost 40lbs and feel great with the weight off.  (And yes I was eating a ton of food after 8:30 PM! I was a night eater!)

What is one piece of advice that you would pass along to a new athlete who is just starting CrossFit? 
Give your best effort... You get out of it what you put into it.

You did your first individual CrossFit competition a few months ago. Can you tell us about that experience? Do you have any other competitions coming up?
The Master of the Universe competition was my first comp and boy was I intimidated.  I just did not want to embarrass myself.  But in preparation the people that I trained with were very supportive and helped me tremendously.  It was so much fun to compete with Denise and Jason and I was glad to see some people from DelVal came out to cheer us on. I'm looking forward to doing that competition next year and hope to place better than this year.  The next comp is the All Y'all and I am looking forward to that challenge. I am sure it will be a blast.
